Partner Support Program – Support Caller

Purpose:

To provide support, information and referrals to victims of domestic violence whose partners are on probation for the crime of domestic abuse.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

  • Contact victims of domestic violence by telephone.
  • Our client’s safety is paramount.  Assess each client’s level of safety and help them develop a safety plan as required.  Do ongoing safety planning throughout contact with clients.
  • Provide emotional support by listening to and validating the client’s feelings.
  • Provide education/information to clients about domestic violence, ie.  Discuss the cycle of violence, and assist in identifying violent and controlling behaviors of the offender to reduce minimization and denial. 
  • Help clients identify options and resources available to them.  Provide appropriate referrals.
  • Provide appropriate documentation of client contact according to program specific templates.

 

 

Commitment Requirements: 

One three hour shift per week and a minimum six month commitment

 

Skills and Qualifications:

 

  • Non-judgmental, open-minded and willing to learn
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Basic understanding of family violence and the cycle of abuse

 

 

Orientation and Training:

All volunteers are required to complete 15 hours of mandatory training and an orientation before they volunteer.  In addition, volunteers are required to attend occasional volunteer/staff meetings and take part in ongoing training opportunities.  

 

Supervision:

Volunteers are supervised by the Partner Support Program Team Leader.

 

Security Requirements:  

A Police Information Check (PIC through CPS) and Intervention Record Check (Alberta Children’s Services) are required.
